Description INTRODUCTION: Spectral analysis of heart rate variability (SAHRV) provides the possibility to quantify regulatory influences of cardiac autonomic nervous system. Little data are available concerning the variability and reproducibility of the method and recommended normal limit data. METHODS: SAHRV was examined in 167 healthy individuals ( 90 women, median age 44 years) subdivided into 6 subgroups (equal to particular age decades). In each of these subgroups, age-related normal limit data were set. In 21 individuals, examination was repeated 3 to 5 times to assess intra-individual variability. RESULTS: Spectral power values showed significant negative correlation with age, high interindividual variability (49-200 %) and considerable intraindividual variability (about 35%). CONCLUSIONS: Normal data for particular parameters of SAHRV should be age-stratified. Their setting, however, is complicated by extreme interindividual variability of the values. High intraindividual variability should also be considered.
