Description The key feature of the neuropathology of schizophrenia is the cortical thickness reduction due to the neuropil reduction of pyramidal neurons in II. and III. cortical layers. First-generation antipsychotics exert neurotoxic effect on brain morphology. The second generation of antipsychotics stimulates neuroplastic processes. There is, however, no evidence that they target the neuropathological changes in schizophrenia, that induced neuroplasticity in fact corrects the pathology of schizophrenia.
