Description | In this text the author thinks of the city as of the social structure which is the space of culture innovations. The city is seen as a meeting point of different culture impulses and stimulations; their combination and reciprocal influence are the base of social and culture change. Thanks to this combination of heterogeneous impulses the city can be perceived as a "birthplace of progress". The author supposes that heterogeneity and diversity are fundamental for the innovations and change that occur in the modern city. Thereby "the Stranger" as a metaphor as well as a real actor is a part of the urban space. The first part of the text deals theoretically with "utopia" definition based on writings of Mannheim and Kumar. The theme of the second part is the absence/presence of "the Stranger" in these descriptions; the text is concerned concretely with More's Utopia, The State of the Sun of Campanella and finally with Fourier's theoretical conception of social structure called Falange. |
