Description | The matrix metalloproteinases are a family of proteolytic enzymes which are known to degrade extracellular matrix. They participate in tissue remodelling in certain physiological and pathological conditions. They play an important role in the process of neuroinflammation, for example in multiple sclerosis. This review maps the state of present knowledge on the importance of the matrix metalloproteinases in the pathophysiology of multiple sclerosis, and it also points out possible uses of these findings in clinical practice. |
