Description The Simulium reptans group represents one of the most important and unresolved systematic problems within the family Simuliidae. According to Crosskey & Howard (1996) the group comprises 17 species, Rubzov (1956) includes 20 species recorded in USSR, Knoz (1980) reported 2 species for ex-Czechoslovakia, whereas Jedlička (1996) includes 4 species recorded in Slovakia: Simulium reptans (Linnaeus, 1758), Simulium galeratum Edwards, 1920, Simulium colombaschense (Scopoli, 1780) and Simulium voilense Serban, 1960. These Slovakian species are divided into two pairs accordance with some morphological characters: S. reptans+S. galeratum and S. colombaschense+S. voilense. S. galeratum and S. voilense are difficult to determine in some stages, however, they are considered as separate species. Carlsson (1962) introduced a new name for the species S. galeratum: Simulium reptantoides, subsequently used by Knoz & Jedlička (1997) as well as in my work. My studies on the Simulium reptans species group based on rich examined material show that 4 species and 1 form exist in Slovakia: Simulium reptans, Simulium reptans 2, Simulium reptantoides, Simulium colombaschense and Simulium voilense. The form S. reptans 2 can be separated from S. reptans in the pupal stage only.
