Description The aim of the text is to describe how ethnocultural identification reflects in everyday practices and spheres of relevance - in this case, how actors thematize their nationality choices on the census forms. The basic question is rooted in a seeming paradox: although there are 250,000 Roma in the Czech Republic according to relevant estimates, “only” 32,000 and 12,000 claimed Romany nationality in the censuses of 1991 and 2001, respectively. The research is based on the presumption that a situation forms ethnocultural identity. The research “Czech/Roma Negotiation Strategies” forms the basis of this text and it is based on pursuing the function of ethnicity as a category of practice and how it is projected into Czech/Roma negotiation strategies. The research project focuses on the formation of strategies and practices chosen by socially excluded Roma in order to be integrated into the Core Group or, how the Roma perceive the possibilities and boundaries of inclusion.
