Description | We approach the dynamics of social inclusion and the constitution of solidarity with the concept of commemoration. Through commemorative acts cultures/communities of memory establish and re-interpret their shared memories and identities. Our text focuses on the relationship between (a) commemorative acts which constitute minority identities based on victimhood and (b) core cultures of memory which are grounded by the state. In the first part we outline a general sociology of memory with a special attention to the theory of cultural pragmatics as it was developed by Jeffrey C. Alexander. In the second part we analyse two acts of commemoration. The first is related to the cultural trauma of the Trianon treaty displacing Hungarians after the First World War, while the second is related to the cultural trauma of the Holocaust. These acts of commemoration represent two distinct types of relationship between minority and core cultures of memory. The text concludes with a theoretical scheme which enable us to conceive the relationship between social inclusion and commemoration from three perspectives: (i) from the shared background of commemorative acts in the sense of cultural codes and narratives; (ii) from the reception of commemorative acts by various audiences and its social effects; (iii) from the institutional preconditions and resources of commemorative act. |
