Description Transport is a key factor influencing the structure of geographical space because it enables the existence of economic and social contacts between distant regions. The article focuses on the analysis of the development of the European transport market after 1970 while paying special attention to railway. In the past decades, railway has lost its position in the passenger and freight transport mainly at the expense of road transport which was better at meeting clients' demand for speed and quality. Therefore the article tries to find conditions which resulted in the above mentioned development. Since railway is widely considered to be environmentally friendly, the article also looks at the way this issue is treated within the common European transport policy.
