Description Genomes of closely related treponemes, Treponema pallidum ssp. pallidum (Nichols) and Treponema paraluiscuniculi were compared using several techniques of genomics and molecular biology. T. pallidum ssp. pallidum is the causative agent of a highly invasive human disease syphilis whereas T. paraluiscuniculi is not pathogenic to humans.
