Description People suffering from certain behavioral or emotional disorders often solve their problems with the help of nicotine. Therefore the smokers suffer more often from some symptoms of anxiety, panic or phobias, eating disorders (bulimia, alternative diets) or other forms of maladaptation. Cigarette smoking is associated with heavy depressions, schizophrenia and alcoholism. Atributive risk of smoking for suicides is similar to that of coronary heart disease. Prospective studies have found the association of dose and effect, even after standardisation of other suicidal risk factors. Presented work is describing results of investigation of mothers and fathers made 18 month after the birth of their child observed in the frame of ELSPAC study. We divided parents according to their smoking behaviour. The answers touching different feelings and their frequency as well as occurence of neurologic and psychiatric problems between the 6th and 18th months after the delivery were assessed in questionnaires with reference titles PN 18/1 and PN 18/3. Significance of differences was tested between non-smokers and other groups of smokers with the use of SPSS and EPI INFO programmes (tests chí-quadrate, Fischer`s, Mantel-Haenstel`s, ANOVA). Smoking women, especially heavy smokers, showed in anamnesis significantly more often than non-smokers stress situations associated with position of lonely mother or separation from former partner. Smokers of both sexes showed more frequent consumption of alcohol than non-smokers, and also the amount of consumed alcohol was higher in case of smokers (more than two drinks). Women, heavy smokers, significantly differed from non-smokers in frequency of using different medicaments influencing their psychical status and neurologic problems. Women gave occurence of most of both neuro-psychical and somato-psychical unpleasant feelings more often than men. Smokers of both sexes, especially those medium and heavy, were afflicted more often than non-smokers. Heavy smokers of both sexes feel more often very unsatisfied or very unhappy. Health neurologic and psychiatric problems, including those consulted with the doctor, occured more often in case of women` heavy smokers were suffering from these problems significantly more often. Suicidal attempts occured in both sexes, their frequency was significantly highest in the group of heavy smokers.
