Description The report deals with the question to what extent is the Czech population ready to accept foreigners within the context of low Czech fertility and ageing of Czech population. In its first part, it summarizes basic knowledge about immigration and its effects on society that decided to accept larger number of foreigners. It also deals with causes of immigration, brings facts about the economic effects of immigration and shows on the basis of literature review that immigration per se cannot offset negative economic effects of population ageing but it can to a certain extent slow down the crisis in pension systems. Moreover it shows that immigration is not able to prevent demographic ageing, nevertheless it can partially compensate low fertility of the major population. In its second part it presents result of a special survey on a representative sample of Czech adult population which was focused on perception of foreigners and immigrants by the Czechs. The Czechs attitudes towards immigrants are nor very favorable and can be thus a major obstacle in the effort of the Czech government to introduce active pro-immigration policy.
