Description The aim of this discussion paper is to show that efforts to introduce pronatalist population policy measures can be a tricky business because many of the assumptions of successful policy im-plementation cannot be met. They are as follows: our ability to forecast future fertility, the ability to assess its socio-economic impact, the ability to set up the required level of future fertility so that the required socio-economic consequences are met, our knowledge about causal model of determinants of fertility, and our ability to mobilize political forces to formulate political measures which could be politically feasible. The paper suggests that instead of direct pronatalist policy measures it is more rational to make efforts in deeper implementation of welfare policies concerning poverty, unemployment, housing and education.
