Description Using X-ray diffraction, the structural analysis of the isolated metabolite resulted in demonstration of iodinin (1,6-dihydroxyphenazine-5,10-dioxide) in Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans a A. thiooxidans cultures. The amount of this metabolite varied from culture to culture, though the conditions that promote the rate of its production are currently not known. The physiological function of iodinin in A. ferrooxidans is unknown. It is possible that sites on the cell surface are covered with this metabolite, thereby facilitating hydrophobic interactions between cell surfaces and sulfur particles. Such an interaction would be important for the adsorption of A. ferrooxidans onto sulfur surfaces, in addition to other possible adsorption mechanisms. This report describes the first documentation of iodinin formation by sulfur-oxidizing bacteria.
