Description The chapter refers to the genesis of the term social exclusion and its current usage. It seems to be more appropriate a concept than poverty, built into the context of a broader notion of social processes, such as (dis)integration, solidarity and participation. Exclusion from paid work (job) is considered a core of social exclusion nowadays. Nevertheless, it is perceived to be a mechanism aimed at social control or hegemony in society since time out of mind, too. There are many problems associated with both the social identity of the excluded and their attitudes towards majority society and its values. This is the reason for focusing attention on the relations between social exclusion and citizenship and a discussion about exclusion of social and ethnic groups. The strategies that a society adopts to face threats to its integrity and values by the excluded may represent an attempt to integrate the excluded in the mainstream of social life (reinforcement of solidarity) and enable them to participate individually and collectively in the life of society
