Description | The paper explores the relationship between sustainable way of life and selected socological conceptions of marginality. Using voluntary moderation of consumption as an example, it shows that the commonly used criteria of poverty, e.g. income, level of consumption and absence in the labour market, do not necessarily correlate with marginality and social exclusion. As long as the media presents the unemployed as persons fatally excluded from society, it deadens their ability to freely seek alternative life paths. Besides, following alterations in life conditions, a transformation of priorities in society can be anticipated, in favour of basic human needs such as time, attention, space, piece, nature, and safety. Such a shift might radically transform the criteria of prosperity and poverty in the future. However, it can already be partially observed today. |
