Description | In this paper, I explore the phenomenon of reality shock that often affects novice teachers during their first year at school. This shock arises when these teachers encounter situations for which they were not prepared during their time in university. Most of the research on the phenomenon of reality shock links this phenomenon mainly to reasons such as classroom discipline, pupil motivation, dealing with individual differences between pupils, pupil assessment, relationships with parents, classroom management or lack of materials and supplies. Another area that emerged in the data obtained from the audio-recorded interviews with novice teachers was conflict with the school leaders at the school where the teachers had joined. I will use the example of one particular teacher to illustrate how such conflict with school leader can lead to a disruption of that teacher's identity, a change in her teaching practice, and even thoughts of leaving the school. This fact thus brings a new and interesting angle to the discussion. For it seems that disagreements and conflicts between school leader and novice teachers can create tension and stress that can lead to a sense of reality shock. This finding also offers room for more subtle analyses that explore this emerging theme in more depth. |
