Description | The aging of the population is one of the significant signs of the current population development not only in Europe, but also on a global scale. The age limit for senior citizens usually corresponds to the official retirement age. Under the conditions of Slovakia, the pension ceiling is 64 years. The growing share of seniors creates pressure not only for the provision of health and social care, but also for their active involvement in the life of society. One of the possibilities is the participation of seniors in public administration as elected representatives at the local level. In the paper, we evaluate the participation of seniors in the administration of public affairs at the local level in the conditions of Slovakia not only through their candidacy for the position of mayor, but also their success rate and the number of elected candidates for mayor. The basis for the analysis was the data of the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic for elections held at the local level in the Slovak Republic. The analysis showed that in the elections held in 2018, compared to the previous elections in 2014, the number of candidates for mayors aged 65+ increased by almost 49% and the number of elected mayors aged 65+ increased by 47% |
