Description | The talk demonstrates that social constructionism, which is used by some academics and activists to justify the need for social reform, de facto delegitimizes such a reform and undermines its own goals. In the talk, I distinguish several forms of social constructionism. After that, I show that social constructionism is used to relativize certain phenomena that are generally considered objectively valid, natural, and binding. I then show that the adoption of social constructionism also necessarily devalues fundamental values such as justice and well-being, towards which the social reform proposed by the constructionists is to be directed. The only criterion that remains for the assessment of various social arrangements is the elusive criterion of practicality, which hardly enables constructivists to achieve their ethical and moral goals. |
