Description From a biochemical point of view, lysozyme is a 5-hydroxytryptamine enzyme from the class of hydrolases. In humans, it is found in saliva, tears, nasal mucus, blood plasma and breast milk. Thanks to the ability to disrupt the bacterial wall, it has strong antibacterial effects. An increased concentration of lysozyme may indicate overtraining in athletes. In the presented study, the content of lysozyme in the saliva of young athletes was monitored. A total of 49 athletes, 39 boys and 10 girls, took part in the study. The athletes were between the ages of 9 and 18. The sports that the individuals studied were: swimming, gymnastics and badminton. 21 athletes participated in swimming (16 boys and 5 girls), gymnastics was represented only by boys (13 boys) and badminton was played by 15 athletes (10 boys and 5 girls). The athletes included in this study underwent saliva collection 3 times in different periods of their sports activity. These periods were: as soon as possible after the transition period, as soon as possible after the pre-season and as soon as possible after the peak of the season. The training load was similar for gymnasts and swimmers. Badminton places less stress on the athlete.
