Description | Contemporary Western society is facing a phenomenon referred to in popular discourse as the "loneliness epidemic". This affects mainly the oldest and youngest cohorts and has a significant impact on people's health and well-being. In this paper we will explore the subjective dimensions of loneliness in relation to social exclusion and their non-linear, complex and gendered relationship in everyday life. Embedded in a constructivist grounded theory approach, we analyze data from 29 qualitative interviews with older men and women. We examine more closely the relationship between biographical events, the intensity of social relationships in later life within and outside the nuclear family, and subjective feelings of loneliness. |
