Description The origin of this book was motivated by three questions: What does aging in the countryside mean? What are the forms of active aging here? And is the countryside an age-friendly place? The unifying line of the study are reflections on how gerontological "glasses" change the view of the countryside and the rural view of aging and what urban hegemony means in aging policies and why the countryside is always "the other". The publication presents a research on the life of older people in heterogeneous rural areas in the Czech Republic. The results are based on a representative survey focused on the quality of life of people over the age of 60 and on qualitative interviews with seniors in different types of municipalities and regions. The study is certainly not a complete overview of life experiences and situations of older people living in rural areas, but the presented data serve as an important basis for discussing some myths associated with rural life - village idyll, village as always and everywhere the same, rather old, slow and poor, but also close to nature or socially cohesive. Rural optics, in turn, reopens in an innovative way some of the major themes of sociology and aging policies, in particular the concepts of "active aging" and "age-friendliness". The book thus builds a bridge between the study of the countryside, often neglecting its senior population, and the study of aging, which sometimes overlooks the heterogeneity of experiences shaped by the environment.
