Citation
Description The oral tradition of Altai Uriankhais in Western Mongolia and in Xinjiang deals frequently with a memory of extraordinary powerful reincarnate lamas (gegeen), even though the region has never had tulkus officially acknowledged by the Qing government. The oral tradition claims existence of three incarnated lamas (Baga lama in the Züün ambanii hošuu, Ih ulaan gegeen and Baga ulaan gegeen in the Baruun ambanii hošuu), as well as a close relationship with non-Uriankhai reincarnations of greater importance (Narobanchen, Cagaan gegeen). Almost unknown from archive sources, the Uriankhai reincarnated lamas of the past play an important role in the local memory as personalities generating fortune of the future generations.
