Description The aim of this paper is to analyze and evaluate the socio-economic and environmental risks of the current situation and the possible future development of the largest mining areas in the Czech Republic, especially the North Bohemian brown coal district, in the relation to the crucial and actual issue of the breaking of the territorially based, environmental limits of mining. The contribution is methodically based on the socio-economic, comparative and statistical analysis of the available literature, references, sources of data, interpretation of information, synthesis and generalization of knowledge. It is clear that the peak of the mining in SHR is behind us and it is in decline. But it does not mean that its meaning will be negligible in the near future. In this district, the mining industry has the deep roots and it is closely related to the entire region. And it will be again the man who will decide to break this tight relationship. Presently discussed territorial limits and their eventual breaking determine how slow will be the decline of mining and how strong will be the further economic, social and environmental impacts, which can be seen from the 90s of the last century. It is almost certain that the mining activity in the region will count with decades, but it is also possible that the mining in the district will benefit even in a hundred years. Whatever it is though, it will be the last chapter in this important period of the history of the region. A new phase begins at the end of this period, probably quite different and perhaps better for the local residents and the entire region.
