Description Political development in Scotland, Catalonia and other European states as well as recent Ukraine crisis show, that Europe faces new wave of the disintegration forces. Secessionist trends are influenced by economic, historical and cultural factors. Beside those traditional factors, there emerges also the recent factor of European integration. We have analysed secession forces regarding intraregional trade, net exports and trust to the European Union. Furthermore we estimated the modified gravity model of international trade. Based on the analysis of 21 secessionist regions within 8 EU countries we have proved that common European market, common currency euro and European support to the regional policy diminish the costs of secession.
