Description The theme of the regional conference was cohabitation of regulated and unregulated competition in the rail industry. It reflected the state of affairs when liberalization of rail transport in CEE countries is an undeniable fact, however there are many new challenges for regulators and makers of economic policy. Presented papers dealt with rail competition issues from different interdisciplinary positions. The main regulatory tool is legal implementation of European rules (P. Mlsna, M. Jandová – T. Paleta). There is a need for qualified decision-making in pursuing policy (A. Peltrám – T. Paleta, M. Kvizda), but the economic realities of the Czech railway environment have to be respected (T. Pospíšil, J. Čáp – N. Kudláčková – V. Melichar). The other analysed topics included open access on the Prague– Ostrava line (Z. Tomeš, M. Jandová – V. Rederer), regional aspects of railway competition (J. Mašek – M. Kendra, T. Nigrin, M. Horňák – V. Toth) and railway liberalization in Slovakia (A. Dolinayová – M. Loch, J. Gašparík – L. Pečený – P. Blaho).
