Description The evaluation of textbooks of foreign languages and the issue of teaching foreign languages to pupils with specific learning disabilities are increasingly being focused by foreign language methodology and the related research. The common denominator of both of these topics is the issue of learning materials which are suited to facilitate learning and increase the motivation of these pupils. The paper outlines the function of textbooks in the learning process in general and specifically for learning foreign languages from the viewpoint of both the education theory and foreign language methodology as well as practical experience from schools. The paper also presents an outline of a list of criteria for evaluating textbooks of foreign languages regarding their use in classes with pupils with specific learning disabilities, and a pilot research is described which focuses on the verification of the suggested criteria while evaluating two selected textbooks of German language. As a conclusion, preliminary results of the conducted research are presented.
