The basis of the research project stems from the statement that it is possible to understand prison as an institution that is specifically gendered. This means that through formal as well as informal structures, institutional networks, norms, values, roles and practices of staff and inmates the broader concepts of masculinity and femininity are reproduced.

The project follows up the applicant's dissertation and the initial subcultural level of analysis is enriched by two other dimensions - the prison staff structure and the overall prison policy and the prison's official goals.

The methodological basis is formed by qualitative ethnographic research, employing especially the techniques of participant observation and in-depth interviews. The analysis of the data gathered during the applicant's doctoral research will be further supplemented in the process of additional data collection.

The main outcome and contribution of the project is a monograph that further develops the dissertation thesis, in particular the chapters devoted to research. The book represents above all a contribution to scientific knowledge (to the sociological as well as criminological discourse). Due to the lack of research on the given topic in the Czech context, the project also represents an important empirical contribution. A constitutive outcome of the project is an article to be published in a foreign specialist journal.
